Athens Officer Chris Burton Arrested After Investigation

An Athens-Clarke County police officer has been arrested following an investigation into bribery allegations.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation says Officer Chris Burton, who's 33, was arrested Thursday and is accused of being party to bribery and violating his oath of office.

The GBI says police Chief Joseph Lumpkin on Monday asked for assistance investigating allegations of bribery by one of his officers.

The GBI says an investigation revealed Burton had contacted another officer to say a friend of his would pay money to have his DUI charge dismissed. The second officer reported this information to his superior, prompting the investigation.

Burton was taken to the Clarke County jail, where he was being held on $10,000 bond. Before his arrest, Burton had been put on administrative suspension with pay.
