An Athens-Clarke County police officer has been released from the hospital after being shot in the line of duty, according to authorities.

Athens-Clarke County police said Senior Police Officer Michael Ward was wounded on Sunday and then treated for the single gunshot wound at St. Mary's Hospital.

On Sunday, just before noon, Ward was dispatched to the Fairways at Jennings Mill Apartments in reference to a domestic dispute.

When he arrived at the scene, James Marcantonio, 28, was banging on the door, attempting to gain entry into an apartment, according to officers.

Ward confronted Marcantonio and Marcantonio became combative, Athens-Clarke police said.

During the struggle, Marcantonio took the officer's weapon and Ward was shot once, officials said. Police Capt. Charles Newson described the injury as a superficial gunshot wound when the suspect apparently grabbed the officer's gun while it was holstered.

Additional officers responded to the call and Marcantonio was arrested for aggravated assault and aggravated battery on a police officer.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigations has been called in to assist in the investigation.
