Aimee Copeland: Woman with flesh-eating bacteria to lose hands and foot

Aimee Copeland is now aware of the toll a flesh-eating bacteria has taken on her body, her father said in his blog.

She's already lost a leg to the infection, and leaed doctors will also have to amputate her hands and other foot.

Her father, Andy Copeland, said she displayed her will to fight upon leaing the awful news with three words: "Let's do this."

Mr. Copeland wrote, "A tear rolled down my face as I walked out of her room. I wasn't crying because Aimee was going to lose her hands and foot, I was crying because, in all my 53 years of existence, I have never seen such a strong display of courage."

"Aimee shed no tears, she never batted an eyelash. I was crying because I am a proud father of an incredibly courageous young lady," he added.

Aimee Copeland, a Gwinnett native and graduate student at the University of West Georgia, fell off a homemade zip line May 1 and cut her leg.

The wound somehow became infected by a bacteria which almost claimed her life.

Her family considers it a miracle that she is still alive, and a growing number of supporters are doing what they can to help -- especially when it comes to blood donations.

A group organized by the South Gwinnett Rotary Club traveled by bus to Augusta on Friday to donate blood in Aimee's name at the Shepeard Community Blood Center.

They know if it isn't a match for her, it will help other patients.

"If you give blood for a worthy cause it doesn't hurt," said Paul Posner, who donated blood Friday.

"You just feel good about it."

They are also planning a blood drive in her name Monday in Snellville.
