6-Month-Old Dies After Crash on I-75 With Tractor-Trailer

COBB COUNTY, Ga. -- A 6-month-old baby injured in a Saturday night crash on Interstate 75 has died.

The crash also left four adults recovering after a tractor-trailer landed on top of a vehicle.

Cobb County police said a tractor-trailer and three other cars were involved in the crash at about 10 p.m. Saturday. The scene of the massive crash on Interstate 75 southbound near the Windy Hill Road exit was reopened by Sunday moing.

According to investigators, traffic was stopped on I-75 due to construction in the area but the driver of the tractor-trailer, 59-year-old Henry Lipps, did not brake. Lipps slammed into two vehicles before his wheels lodged into the back seat of a car.

”Early indication is the tractor-trailer was traveling southbound and these vehicles were all impacted by that trailer, said Cobb County police spokesman Joseph Heandez.

Emergency crews had to work to free people from the wreckage and rushed the small child and four adults to area hospitals.

”There are other injuries as well, but they’re not as serious, said Heandez.
 
The infant was a passenger in a GMC Acadia being driven by the child’s father, 25-year-old Donald Morgan, of Douglasville. Morgan’s wife, Candice, 24, was also in the car. Both Donald and Candice Morgan were transported to Atlanta Medical Center with visible injuries. Their 6-month-old child was transported to Scottish Rite Hospital and pronounced dead Monday afteoon.

The driver of a Buick LaSabre was identified as 24-year-old Ramon Mcelrathbey, of Atlanta. His passenger was identified as 21-year-old Coelius Mcelrathbey, also of Atlanta. Both were transported to Grady Hospital with visible injuries.

The driver and passenger in another vehicle were not injured.

Lipps, of New Albany, Ind., was also not injured. He tued himself in to Cobb County police Monday evening. He was charged with second-degree vehicular homicide and following too closely. He was released from the Cobb County Adult Detention Center on $1,300 bond.
