$50K Stolen from North Fulton Tag Office

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. - Police say a break-in at a county tax office has put hundreds of people at risk for identity theft. They say the thieves got away with cash and personal checks after breaking into the North Fulton County Services Building in Sandy Springs over the Memorial Day holiday.

In all, police say more than $50,000 was stolen during the break-in, and that’s raising a lot of questions about security. The office was closed on Wednesday due to the investigation, and many people who tried to visit it were surprised to lea the office was closed for criminal reasons.

According to investigators, the suspects were armed only with a crow bar when they got in through the side door of the building. They say the suspects went straight for the tag office, and they used a crow bar to pry open the safe. They also say the thieves tued off a video camera in the building.

In all, $16,000 in cash and $37,000 in personal checks were stolen. Those checks showed the names and account numbers of those who wrote them.

According to the police report, the building has no alarm system. FOX 5’s Chris Shaw received an email from a Fulton County representative on Thursday afteoon, saying that security and crime have never been an issue in the past and that the building is safe. The representative also said that during the day, there are security guards on hand, but did not address the lack of an alarm system.
