2 men charged in videotaped beating of Brandon White plead guilty
Two men accused in the videotaped beating of a man in front of southwest Atlanta store pleaded guilty in court on Tuesday.
Dareal Demare Williams, Dorian Moragne and Christopher Cain were charged in connection with the videotaped assault on 20-year-old Brandon White on McDaniel Street in Atlanta's Pittsburgh community in February.
The video of three men beating White and hurling homophobic slurs at him went viral on the inteet.
Williams and Moragne pled guilty to charges of robbery by force, two counts of aggravated assault, and participating in a street gang.
A third suspect, Cain, is expected to also plead guilty but could not attend Tuesday's hearing because his attoey was unavailable. That hearing is expected to be rescheduled, according to FOX 5's Darryl Carver.
The man suspected of videotaping the assault, Javaris Bradford, has not been captured.
Authorities say that one of the men thought White made a sexual advance at him and the men waited outside the convenience store in southwest Atlanta to attack him.
White says he just wants to move on from the incident.
"It's been a jouey, I've been down, boy have I been down. Now I'm steadily trying to build up," said White.
In accepting their plea, the judge also says he wanted to see the men accept responsibility for their actions, something that will likely be a factor when they're sentenced.
"As long as a person stands up for their responsibility and admit they did something wrong, I have nothing bad to say about a person," said White.
Gay rights groups say the violent attack is the symbol of a larger problem of anti-gay bias.
"The assault issue was a issue but him being a black gay man was the major issue," said Greg Smith of Speak Out Georgia.
Moragne and Williams are expected to be sentenced sometime in July.
