Winds cause trouble in the metro Atlanta area
Tuesday's storms left pockets of damage all over the metro area, most of it caused by trees brought down by heavy winds.
Crews worked into Wednesday to clear a huge tree that came down on La Vista Road in DeKalb County, closing off traffic to the area, and a large tree crushed two cars inside an apartment complex on Collier Road in northwest Atlanta.
The worst of the damage happened in Gordon County's Blackwood neighborhood. A microburst damaged or destroyed 10 structures most of them homes.
A home belonging to the Titus family was sliced apart by trees brought down by the storms. Sierra Titus was next door when the storm hit, and she rushed to her grandmother's home to make sure everyone got to a safe location.
"I had too. My grandmother was next door and I definitely was going to take care of her as well as myself," said Titus.
Richard Cooper of the Gordon County Emergency Management Agency said that the National Weather Service confirmed that the damage was caused by a microburst.
According to the NWS glossary, a microburst is a "convective downdraft with an affected outflow area of less than 2½ miles wide and peak winds lasting less than 5 minutes. Microbursts may induce dangerous horizontal/vertical wind shears, which can adversely affect aircraft performance and cause property damage."There were no injuries reported and only one family was displaced by storm, according to officials.
As of 4 a.m. on Wednesday, Georgia Power officials say about 3,600 customers are without power statewide, with 2,800 of those in the metro Atlanta area.
