Video shows Georgia man David Pressley severing leg after shooting a lawn mower full of explosives
A 32-year-old man who shot a lawn mower filled with explosives in Monroe, Georgia, lost a leg when he was hit by a piece of shrapnel.
David Pressley loaded the lawn mower with several times the recommended amount of Tannerite, an explosive combination of ammonium nitrate and aluminum powder used for target practice.
The chemical creates a loud noise along with a water vapor cloud to indicate a successful hit.
Pressley's friends filmed him on their cell phones as he shot more than 20 rounds while walking towards his target, 11alive.com reported.
His friends told police they filled the old lawn mower with three pounds of Tannerite 'to blow it up' and filmed their friend on their phones as he stood less than 50 feet away from the target around 3.50pm on Saturday.
Tannerite, which can be purchased at sporting goods stores, creates a water vapor cloud when it is detonated by a bullet.
The FBI advisory suggests using one pound of the explosive, while Walton County Sheriff Joe Chapman told WSBTV people should use less than a pound while standing at least 300 feet away.
But viral videos show people disregarding the safety advice and filming several hundred pounds of Tannerite exploding everything from cars to even a ba.
In the video captured by his friends, Pressley can be seen wearing a vest, sunglasses and baseball cap as he fires at the lawn mower and walks closer and closer to his target.
The cameraman sways when an explosion suddenly hits, and blood stains can be seen on his shorts while Pressley screams off camera: 'I blew my leg off! Call an ambulance'
His two friends called 911, tied a touiquet around his leg and drove him to emergency medical services down the road.
The 32-year-old was airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, and is still recovering from the accident.
Neighbor Lydiah Mays told WSBTV: 'You would've had to be on drugs or something to think it was a good idea to play with that and try to blow up a lawn mower.'
She also said her entire house shook, and she heard Pressley, who lost his left leg below the knee, screaming.
It is legal to use Tannerite on your own property. No charges have been filed.
