Victor Hill expected to ask judge to drop charges
Former Clayton County Sheriff Victor Hill is expected to be back in a courtroom on Monday.
Hill, who just won a runoff for his old job, faces corruption charges that could keep him out of office. He has maintained his innocence in spite of the 37 count indictment.
Among the claims against Hill are that he ordered an employee to help him write a book, he used company funds to pay for a vacation rental, he put a county worker on administrative leave to travel with him, and he misused company vehicles.
Hill's attoey says the charges were politically motivated. They were brought about by outgoing Sheriff Kem Kimbrough. Hill defeated Kimbrough in this summer's runoff election.
The issue of whether Hill takes office at all remains to be settled. The goveor could suspend him and place an interim sheriff in the position. But that can only happen if Hill takes the office.
Of course, his post is not guaranteed despite having no opposition on the ballot. A write-in candidate has emerged to challenge Hill's outright claim to Sheriff. County Chief Deputy Garland Watkins launched that campaign.
Hill's lawyers are expected to ask for the charges to be dismissed on Monday moing when they appear before a Clayton County judge.
