One of seven UPS workers and former workers accused of stealing packages went before a judge Wednesday.
Police say Jimmie Williams and several other workers created fake labels that diverted packages to their friends.
Police say Williams, a UPS worker, and Tony Belk, a UPS supervisor, would ”over-label packages at the UPS Customer Center near Forest Park.
”What would happen, freight would come into the business and these employees and former employees were producing labels that would re-route the packages, Clayton County police Maj. Joseph Woodall said.
The packages would go to the homes of one of the employees or former employees.
Officers say the group was interested in electronics from Best Buy.
”Cellular phones, earbuds, things of that nature, Woodall said.
Detectives say it was a well thought-out scheme.
”If they put this much thought into a legitimate job they would be CEOs, Woodall said.
Police say it went on for about nine months. UPS became suspicious and that's when police began investigating. Williams and the other employees were fired.
Police say there were two groups of employees stealing packages and they don't think they were connected.
UPS says it’s important to note its security systems picked this up.
