Two Cobb County Men Dead After Exposure to Toxic Fumes
Kennesaw Fire crews responded to a scene where two men were found dead inside a home. Authorities believe exposure to toxic fumes in the house may have killed them.
The incident started Thursday moing when the home at 12 Oaks Circle had its power shut off because the residents couldn't pay the bill. They borrowed a generator from a neighbor so they could have power in the home.
Neighbors said the generator was left outside but that the door was cracked open to the back yard. Exhaust fumes from the generator made their way into the home.
Neighbors say that the men stayed in the home most of the day, breathing the fumes. When the woman and her son came home from work and school, they found the two men who they thought were sleeping. They tried to wake them up but couldn't. That's when authorities were called.
"We immediately suspected carbon monoxide. We were prepared when we got here with our monitors. Our alarms sounded before we ever entered the front door," said Lt. Dan Dupree of the Cobb County Fire Department.
Ken Lewis, the neighbor who loaned the generator, was devestated upon hearing the news.
The daughter and her son were briefly exposed to the fumes and were taken to a hospital to be checked out. They are expected to be ok.
State law requires that all new homes have a working carbon monoxide detector. There's no word yet on the age of the home and whether it had a working detector.
