Teen Alonzo Daniel, 2 Women Killed In Metro Atlanta Thunderstorms
MABLETON, Ga. -- A deadly storm system Thursday evening left three people dead in metro Atlanta.
One of the victims was 19-year-old Alonzo Daniel, of Mableton. Family members said he was cleaning debris in his driveway on Stroud Drive when a tree fell on top of him.
”As he was running, the tree caught him, Daniel’s grandfather Robert Johnson said.
Several neighbors said they tried to help, but it was too late.
”All this mess came tumbling down on him. He didn’t expect it, Johnson said.
Channel 2’s Darryn Moore spoke to Daniel's family members as they coped with the loss hours afterward. The area was still surrounded by police tape and the uprooted tree had not been cleared.
Daniel’s mother, Diane, said her only son will be missed.
”Everyone truly loved my son, she said.
Two women were also crushed by a falling tree in Buckhead. The victims were in a Mazda Miata convertible on Paces Ferry Road around dinner time, firefighters said. They said the driver lost control and crashed into a mailbox.
A neighbor said the accident could have been prevented.
”What they need to do is go down this road and notify people that they have dead trees at the edge of the road to get them taken down," said resident Clifton Healy.
