Tokyo named 2020 Olympics host city after winning IOC vote ahead of Istanbul and Madrid
Tokyo has won the right to host the 2020 Olympic Games following an Inteational Olympic Committee (IOC) members vote in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The Japanese capital prevailed against the Turkish city of Istanbul for the 32nd Olympiad, despite fears surrounding its proximity to the stricken Fukushima nuclear power plant.

The third bidding city, the Spanish capital of Madrid, was earlier eliminated after the first round of voting – the third time in a row it has missed out, having been beaten by London 2012 and Rio 2016 previously.
The news – announced by IOC president Jacques Rogge - was greeted by wild celebrations back home in Tokyo, at 5am local time, where street parties were taking place – somewhat reminiscent of the scenes in Trafalgar Square when London won the 2012 Olympics in 2005.

Before the voting, conces had been raised about each of the three bids.
Madrid faced questions over the Spanish govement's ability to afford the Games, having endured an ongoing economic crisis over the past five years.
However, their rival bids found themselves on equally shaky ground.

Istanbul's representatives were questioned about recent political unrest in the city, as well as the region as a whole with the Syria crisis raging on Turkey's doorstep.
And Tokyo had to calm fears over water quality and residual radiation from the triple reactor meltdown at the plant in 2011.
