Texas Candidate Blake Farenthold Pictured in pyjamas with a near-naked model

Advice for young political players: If you are serious about running for high office, don't be photographed in duckie pyjamas next to a lingerie model.

Evidently, Texas Republican House candidate Blake Farenthold didn't get that memo.

The Democrats were getting a lot of mileage at Mr Farenthold's expense this week, after managing to get their hands on an embarrassing snap of the married father of two snuggling up to a young woman wearing next to nothing.

There was nothing particularly inappropriate about the image - apparently Mr Farenthold was attending a fundraiser with a fancy-dress theme at a local bar last year - but it's all about the spin that can be put on such an image.

Democrat incumbent Solomon Ortiz wasted no time running an advert with the image, and others of Mr Farenthold drinking alcohol and attending other celebrations, saying that Mr Farenthold plans to give the rich bankers on Wall Street a 'trillion-dollar tax cut'.

Mr Farenthold is attempting to keep a dignified silence over the photos, not that the Republicans can accuse the Democrats of dirty tricks.

Virginian Democrat congressional candidate Krystal Ball, 28, was left furious recently when she discovered that raunchy photos of herself simulating a sex act at a party had surfaced on the inteet - with little mystery as to who was responsible for posting them.

On his official website, Mr Farenthold attacked Mr Ortz, saying: 'My opponent has been in office 27 years. That’s too long. In those 27 years, the congressman has lost touch with the people of south Texas.'

By the looks of things, losing touch with the people of Texas is not something Mr Farenthold can be accused of.
