A 16-year-old will be charged as an adult after allegedly stabbing his stepfather to death with a Samurai-sword, the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office said Monday afteoon.
Joseph M. Addis, of Jasper, appeared Monday moing in court, where a judge ordered he undergo a psychological examination, Lt. Kris Stancil with the Pickens sheriff’s office said. Addis was also appointed an attoey, Stancil said.
Addis was initially being held at the Juvenile Detention Center in Dalton and his first court appearance was closed to the media, Stancil said. But the teen’s name and booking photo were released after he was charged in Pickens County Superior Court, police said.
A relative of the teen called 911 late Friday night to report the stabbing at the Jasper home, Stancil said Sunday night. Deputies found the victim, Christopher Allen, inside the Fe Creek Court home, located in the gated community of the Preserve at Sharp Mountain, Stancil said. The community is located about 60 miles north of Atlanta.
Addis was taken into custody shortly after deputies arrived at the home. Allen, 36, was taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta, where he died during emergency surgery, Stancil said.
Investigators believe the teen stabbed his stepfather with a Samurai-style sword following an argument, Sheriff Donnie Craig said in an emailed statement. The sword was part of a collection of replicas in the home, owned by the boy’s grandparents, according to police.
Addis, who previously lived with family in Henry County, was being held Monday night without bond.
