AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Richmond County school officials say a substitute high school teacher has been arrested after witnesses said he pulled a pocketknife on a disruptive student.

The Augusta Chronicle reports officials say 38-year-old Brian Marcus was taken to the Richmond County Jail on Wednesday and charged with carrying weapons within a school safety zone.

Josey High School Principal Ronald Wiggins says Marcus was teaching a science class of 15 10th-graders when a student stood up and refused to sit down.

Wiggins says Marcus grabbed the student by the arm and pointed a pocketknife at him. He says two students alerted basketball coach Jabari Levi and school safety officers were summoned.

Richmond County schools spokesman Louis Svehla says Marcus has been listed as a substitute teacher since 2005.
