Police say a student at Savannah State University died from gunshot wounds after a shooting on campus Thursday night.

According to school officials, Christopher Starks, a junior from the metro Atlanta area, died at a local hospital.

Investigators say the shooting happened at or near the student union.

An alert was also sent to students telling them to stay where they were and  the campus was on lockdown.

Around 11:30 p.m. a reporter with ABC affiliate WJCL-TV reported cars were being allowed to leave the campus, but were being searched first.
