Stone Mountain Woman Accused in Atlanta Police Officer's Death Denied Bond
ATLANTA - The woman accused of hitting and killing an Atlanta police officer on the interstate made her first court appearance on Thursday.
Chasity Jones, 22, was present with her attoey as she faced a judge. A Fulton County judge denied Jones bond on the felony charge of homicide by vehicle. However, the judge did allow bond on the two misdemeanor charges she faces.
She appeared to be hiding behind her attoey during the proceedings. She appeared very upset and cried during the court proceedings. Jones' mother and sister were also present during her court appearance.
Detectives say Jones' blood alcohol level was twice the legal limit when she hit Senior Police Officer Gail Thomas late Tuesday night. Police say Jones was driving the car that hit and killed Thomas , who was working an accident at the Interstate 75/85 Brookwood spilt late Tuesday night.
Prosecutors talked about her extensive criminal history, translating into six citations over five years. Four of them were for speeding.
Thomas' family says the entire tu of events has been hard.
"Tragic. I was notified by dispatchers. First one to be at the hospital. It's devastating," said Thomas' relative Gail Butler.
Jones' family declined to make any comment.
Jones is being held in the Fulton County Jail.
