Southeast Atlanta shooting leaves teen James Simmons dead, another injured

Atlanta police say they are investigating a shooting that happened Thursday night that left one teen dead and another in the hospital. 

The incident report shows the shooting took place around 8:30 p.m. at the intersection of Jonesboro Road and Sawtell Avenue in southeast Atlanta. 

James Simmons, 19, of Atlanta has been id'd as the victim. Report says Simmons was in a white car with another teen when a vehicle pulled up next to them and opened fire. Both teens were shot and crashed into a fence nearby. 

Neighbors said they heard the gunfire and called 911. 

Simmons died at the scene and the other teen was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital. Investigators said he was alert, conscious and breathing. 

Police also said the surviving teen has cooperated with detectives.
