Sarah Palin desecrates Old Glory by signing on the American Flag

Sarah Palin has been accused of being unpatriotic while out on the midterm election campaign trail on Wednesday when she signed a star-spangled banner given to her by a supporter.
The Tea Party activist is said to be in violation of the U.S. Flag code law when she signed the American flag which bans any desecration of Old Glory.
Subsection 8, part(g) of the code states: 'The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing of any nature.

Palin was giving autographs to her fans, signing books and hats when she was handed a flag. She scribbles on it with her marker pen, waved the flag and then handed it back to the supporter.

However, defacing a flag is covered under the First Amendment to the U.S. constitution which says defacing a flag is an act of protected speech.

The most recent attempt in 2006 to pass a ban on desecrating the American flag was rejected by the Senate in a close vote of 66 in favour and 34 opposed - one vote short of the two-thirds majority needed to send the amendment to be voted on the States.

Although not illegal, it is viewed as a sign of disrespect to do anything other than hold or wave an American flag.

The ex-Alaska goveor yesterday weighed in on another First Amendment argument after the sacking of long-time National Public Radio analyst Juan Williams.

Williams was on Bill O'Reilly's show when he made the controversial comments that he gets nervous when he's on a plane with Muslims.

He told O'Reilly: 'When I get on the plane. I got to tell you, if I see people who are in Muslim garb and I think, you know, they are identifying themselves first and foremost as Muslims, I get worried. I get nervous'.

His comments led to NPR dismissing Williams late Wednesday after 11 years with the company. Juan, like Palin, is also a regular paid panelist on Fox News Channel.

Palin immediately hopped on to her Twitter account and tweeted: 'NPR defends 1st Amendment Right, but will fire u if you exercise it. Juan Williams: u got taste of Left's hypocrisy, they screwed up firing you'.

NPR said in a statement that they terminated Williams' contract as his remarks were 'inconsistent with our editorial standards and practices, and undermined his credibility as a news analyst with NPR'.

Williams is currently declining to comment on his firing but said: 'I better bite my tongue at this point'.

Palin is set to continue to enjoy her time in the spotlight with the airing of her new reality series which will show her life in Alaska.

In the eight part series which premieres on U.S. television next month, the ex-goveor screeches at the TV crew: 'This is flippin' fun. I'd rather be doing this than be in some stuffy political office. I'd rather be out here being free'.

The comment immediately led to speculation that she will move into the lucrative world of television and abandon any dreams of becoming Commander-in-Chief - for now at least.

The show, entitled Sarah Palin's Alaska, will showcase the Republican politician and her family as they carry on with their day to day life away from the campaign trail.

She shows off her outdoorsy nature by going skiing, sledding, kayaking, bear watching and fishing with her husband Todd and five children, Track, 21, Bristol, 20, Willow, 16, Piper, 9, and Trig, 2.

The show is the latest in a string of media related projects for the politician. The release of her second book, America By Heart, is due in late November - timed perfectly for half way through the televisions show's run.

Her first book Going Rogue, published in 2009, became an inteational best seller.

Her eldest daughter Bristol, a single mother, is currently a contestant on ABC's Dancing With The Stars but does feature in the show along with her son Tripp.
