Sandy Springs residents on edge after string of break-ins

Sandy Springs police are investigating a rash of break-ins at a local apartment complex.

Since December, investigators said burglars have broken into eight units at the Edgewater at Sandy Springs Apartments on Roswell Road.

It happened to Clare Aold on New Year's Day.

"My window was smashed, someone had been in my home and taken my things," Aold told Channel 2's Mike Petchenik.

Aold said the thief stole her PlayStation 3 system and all of her games. But most of all, she said, they stole her peace of mind.

"I don't sleep well. I don't leave the house," Aold said.

Police reports obtained by Petchenik show that someone has been stealing electronics, cash and jewelry from units, many times when people were gone during the day.

Bill Hamilton, executive vice president of Winthrop Management, the company that owns the complex, told Petchenik the company has spent nearly $2 million in upgrades to the property.

Hamilton told Petchenik one improvement includes fixing a security gate out front and issuing new security badges to residents. He said it's up to residents to report any suspicious activity to police and that he believes the suspect is someone who lives or used to live in the apartments.

Aold told Petchenik she has one simple request of the burglars: "Save yourself some trouble for the New Year, tu over a new leaf and just bring me my things back."
