The wife of former Atlanta Police Chief Richard Pennington has been charged with drunken driving, police told GA Daily News.

Rene Pennington was stopped by Atlanta Police on Saturday moing. Officers told Channel 2’s Ryan Young that a patrol unit noticed a vehicle driving on a rim near Peachtree and Pine streets about 2 a.m. Pennington was arrested after a series of field sobriety tests. Rene Pennington was then booked into the Atlanta Detention Center.

Richard Pennington served as Atlanta's police chief from 2002 until 2009. He resigned from his post in 2010 when Mayor Kasim Reed took office.

The former chief suffered a stroke that summer and underwent rehabilitation at the Shepherd Center.
