Remembering fallen Riverdale Police Major Greg Barney
Riverdale police have identified the major killed in a shooting in Clayton County as Greg "Lem" Barney

A veteran officer with the Riverdale Police Department died Thursday, after being shot by a suspect as police tried to serve a warrant at an apartment complex. Major Greg Baey was shot as the suspect ran from an apartment late Thursday moing, according to the Clayton County police chief. He died later at the hospital.

The shooting happened at the Villages on the River apartments on Church Street in Riverdale. SKYFOX 5 flew over the scene shortly after the shooting. Aerial images showed a heavy police presence in the aftermath of the shooting.

According to investigators, the Clayton County Police Department's narcotics task force was attempting to serve a no-knock warrant just after 11 a.m. Thursday. A suspect inside one apartment ran out the back door and into the path of a uniformed Riverdale police officer. That's when the suspect shot Major Baey.

Soon after that, a Clayton County police officer spotted the suspect and opened fire, striking the suspect.

The suspect was injured and taken to the hospital.

The major was rushed to the hospital, but was later pronounced dead.

The officer who shot the gunman will be placed on administrative leave, which is the standard policy for officer-involved shootings.
