Atlanta police are searching for a killer. Authorities said a man was shot eight times in the northwest part of the city.

Police spent much of the late night hours questioning witnesses in the 700 block of North Avenue.

Investigators said several people were around at about 9:30 Saturday night when a man in his 20s was shot and killed.

"Its my understanding the victim in this case, Mr. Dominique Smith, was walking in the immediate area of North Avenue when he encountered the suspect who produced a handgun," said Atlanta Police Lt. Keith Meadows.

Police spent much of the night processing a crime scene where shell casings were scattered all over the intersection of North Avenue and Griffin Street.

Officers said the suspect fired his gun at least 11 times - with eight of those shots striking Smith.

"We haven't been able to determine a motive at this point. We'll probably better know once were able to question the witnesses," said Meadows. "There were quite a few witnesses on scene; however, we are preliminary stages of our investigation and questioning those witnesses at this point."

Police said the victim lived near the scene of the shooting. Investigators said they are still questioning witnesses and checking out evidence.
