Police have charged the parents in the murder of their 8-month-old girl in Haralson County.

According to the Haralson County Sheriff's Office, the girl died on Wednesday at a home near Tallapoosa. The child was transported to a hospital, where officials notified police.

After investigating, Sheriff Eddie Mixon says that Robert Derek Downey, 46, and Melanie Ann Prichard, 36, were charged with murder and cruelty to children. They could also face drug-related charges, according to Mixon.

The parents are being held at Haralson County Jail.
