Police: Nurse April Echols arrested, accused of stealing from patients
COBB COUNTY, GA - Police say they arrested a Cobb County nurse after she allegedly made thousands of dollars in fraudulent purchases from patients.
According to the Cobb County Sheriff's Office, April Echols, 38, of Loganville is accused of using stolen credit cards from three hospital patients to make nearly $10,000 in fraudulent purchases.
Police say Echols was accused by three separate patients of stealing their money. She allegedly stole more than $4,700 from an ALS patient and more than $4,500 from a second patient.
In one case, a patient noticed that two money orders for $2,000 were purchased at a Publix, along with several ATM withdrawals that produced a total loss of more than $4,700, according to authorities.
In another case, police say a patient had two credit cards stolen and more than $4,000 charged at Wal-Mart, QT and Walgreens. After trying and failing to charge more than $31,000 in transactions, police say Echols pretended to be the victim and called the credit card company to approve charges.
But third time tued out not be a charm.
The third victim told authorities Echols came into her room, knocked over a table in her hospital room that had several items on it – including her credit cards.
But when Echols retued the items, the victim said she noticed one of her credit cards was missing and called the company to cancel it.
Police did not disclose the exact amount Echols allegedly took from the third victim.
Police say Echols worked at Anderson Mill Health and Rehabilitation Center in Austell in December, employed by a nursing services agency.
She was taken into custody Thursday without incident.
Police say she is being charged with two counts of exploitation of a disabled or elderly person and seven counts of credit card fraud-financial transaction.
