Police Investigate Robbery Attempt, Shots Fired at Fayetteville Wal-Mart

Police are investigating a robbery attempt that happened early Friday moing at a Wal-Mart in Fayetteville. They say a man approached an elderly couple and demanded cash, but the husband refused and pulled a pulled out a pocket knife as he chased the suspect, who fired shots at him.

Fayetteville police say around 12:40 a.m., a man approached the Hampton couple in the parking lot of the Wal-Mart on Pavilion Parkway. They say the suspect told them to give them their wallet, and the husband said he didn’t have one. They say the suspect then asked for their money, and the husband refused, saying he needed his money.

According to police, the suspect fired a waing shot and asked if it was worth dying for. They say the wife screamed and ran away, and the husband pulled out a pocket knife and chased the suspect. That’s when police tell FOX 5 the suspect fired at the husband, but missed.   

Police say the suspect fled the scene in a waiting maroon-colored SUV, which was captured on surveillance video. They say as many as three or four men may have been involved.

The couple was not hurt in the incident. Police say they were celebrating the wife’s birthday, and had come to Fayetteville for dinner and a movie.

The gunman is described as a black man who was wearing a blue shirt and blue hat, and was armed with a handgun. He was accompanied by another black man who was between 5’11’ and 6’0’ tall with a thin build. The second man was wearing a dark, short-sleeved shirt, dark pants, and a yellow and black hat.

A reward is offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible. Anyone with information about the suspects or the vehicle they were driving is asked to call the Fayetteville Police Department at (770) 461-4441.
