Police make arrests in botched robbery

Gwinnett County police said after a GA Daily News story, they received a tip that led to the arrest of two alleged bank robbers.

Police said after the story ran about a botched bank robbery, they got a tip with two names. Investigators then ran those names against fingerprints left on a note the day of the robbery and now they have two teenagers in custody.

The robbery happened at the Wells Fargo on Killian Hill Road in September.

Investigators said the suspects visited the bank three times that day, armed with nothing more than a note.

On their third trip, surveillance video showed one suspect pass the note which police said demanded cash.

"While this was going on, I believe it was the taller suspect, says to the shorter suspect, 'Man, I told you this was easy,'" Detective Ben Finney with the Gwinnett County Police Department said.

Police said the teller loaded the bag with money and slipped a dye pack in as well.

"The dye pack explodes, they drop the bag and then flee," Finney said. "They were seen running into a silver, white four-door car and that's about all we had."

Police reached out to GA Daily News. They said that's when a viewer called police, giving them two names.

Those names were Tevin Jones, 18, and Kentay Fields, 17.

But the names and the video weren't enough to make an arrest, police said.

"They had left a demand note behind. So we collected that and also lifted some palm prints, some fingerprints from the counter," Finney said.

Police said Jones' prints were a match and further investigation led to the warrant for Fields.

"We showed up several months later, believing that they had gotten away with it. And all of a sudden Gwinnett County shows up at their front door," Finney said.

Both are teens are charged with robbery by intimidation.

Police said they recovered all the money stolen after the suspects dropped it and ran.
