Dekalb County officials say they have arrested the driver accused of shooting and injuring another driver in what they say was a road rage incident on Highway 78 in Stone Mountain.

According to the DeKalb County police, on October 12, the driver of a black Ford Mustang, Jose Dionicio Ovalles, fired a handgun at a yellow Corvette, injuring the driver, Angelina Christiano.

Christiano told police that the black Mustang started following her too closely, so she waved him by her.

That's when she says he pulled up beside her and fired several shots into her car.

She suffered a serious gunshot wound in the back and was taken to a local hospital.

DeKalb County investigators say witnesses helped identify Ovalles after he was arrested on auto theft charges.

Police say once they identified Ovalles they found he was already in jail on an unrelated charge.

”We’re all much safer now, because he’s in custody," said Capt. Paul Braun.

Authorities charged Ovalles with two counts of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

"We believe right now (that) this is just a road rage incident," Braun said.

He says road rage incidents are growing.

"Try not use any type of hand gestures, you know, even though you may be waving, someone else may interpret that differently," he said.

Ovalles has a criminal history that includes recent charges of trespass and possession of a gun and knife during the commission of a crime. Police say he also has anger issues.

"(Ovalles) has been arrested quite a few times. It's good for the police department and the citizens that he's off the streets," Braun said.
