Opening Statements in Snellville Target Murder Case
GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. - Opening statements are expected to take place Wednesday in the murder trial of Joanna Hayes.
Investigators say Hayes disguised herself as a man, then shot and killed her daughter-in-law in a Snellville Target parking lot, just steps away from Heather Strube's young son.
The crime took place just after a custody exchange between victim Heather Strube and her estranged husband Stephen.
The young mother was killed while her son Carson was strapped in the back seat of her SUV.
Surveillance video caught the killer leaving the scene. Months later Hayes was indicted with crime.
Police say Hayes tried to throw them off the track by disguising herself to look like a man.
The day before jury selection began heather's mom talked with FOX 5 News about the upcoming trial and her loss.
"I'll never have closure. My life will always be Swiss cheese. Always be holes in anything we got to do, they'll be missing parts," said Heather Strube's mother Mary Allen.
She says the trial will be hard on her family but is looking forward to a resolution to the case.
"I want justice for my daughter. I want the person that did this to never get out of jail," said Allen.
The trial is expected to last several weeks.
