Olivia Cox and Megan Smith killed in crash near University of Georgia

The Georgia State Patrol say a car crash near the University of Georgia killed two young women and seriously injured a young man.

According to the police report, Olivia Cox, 22, died at the scene Saturday and Megan Smith, 23, died at the hospital after a Nissan driven by Madison Wilhelm and carrying Cox, Smith, William Maddox and Eric Dobbs left the roadway and overcorrected, crossing the median into northbound lanes of the Athens loop and hitting another car.

23-year-old William Maddox, a University of Georgia graduate, is in critical but stable condition at Athens Regional Medical Center while driver Madison Wilhelm and Eric Dobbs were treated and released.

Cox's family did not want to make a public statement until they have an opportunity to talk with the families of the others involved, but said they believe the accident was weather-related.

They also said Wilhelm is a close friend of the girls and that this was simply a tragic accident.

Police did not issue any citations pending the outcome of their investigation.
