No Bond for Teen Gevin Allen Prince in Great-Grandmother's Death
The 15-year-old boy accused of stabbing his great grandmother to death with a sword faced a judge Wednesday morning. Gevin Allen Prince was charged with malice murder in the death of Mary Gibbs, his great grandmother.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. - The 15-year-old boy accused of stabbing his great-grandmother to death with a sword faced a judge Wednesday moing.

Gevin Allen Prince was charged with malice murder in the death of Mary Gibbs, his great-grandmother. He is also charged with assaulting his grandmother, Laura Prince, and two neighbors who tried to stop the attack.

The teen told the judge he understood the charges.

Douglas County authorities say the 77-year-old great-grandmother was killed while trying to protect her daughter. They say the boy flew into a rage after being told he had to stop playing computer games.

Family members say the boy has a long history of mental problems and say this was not the first time he has attacked someone.

"My mom loved him literally to her death," said David Cook.

David Cook says his mother, 77-year-old Joan Gibbs, would have done anything for her great-grandson, even allowing the 14-year-old to live with her despite his mental problems. That choice, he says, cost her her life.

"I'm in shock. I'm numb. I hadn't had any sleep last night. Family is just in shock. We just don't know what to do," said Cook.

Cook says the teen flew into a rage and stabbed his great-grandmother with a three-foot sword and wounded his grandmother.

"He definitely had mental problems. The courts knew about it and they kept tuing him out. My mom loved him so much that she kept bringing him back home," said Cook.

In fact, Cook says this isn't the first time something like this has happened. He says his great nephew at one point even attacked his own mother, Cook's sister.

"He flipped out about something, his daddy died and she told him. And he flipped out. He picked up a pipe from somewhere and just about beat her to death with it. And the mother hasn't had anything to do with him since then. The last communication I had with the mother was she told me to get him out of that house before he hurt somebody or killed somebody," said Cook.

Cook says the teen was scheduled to leave for a rehabilitation program this Thursday. Instead he faced a judge.

Douglas County District Attoey David McDade said Gevin Allen Prince will be tried as an adult and will soon get a mental evaluation.

McDade said there were other charges against Prince pending in the juvenile court system at the time of the alleged sword attack.

The judge granted no bond to the teen. He will be assigned a public defender.
