Most Americans disapprove of how GOP has handled the debt-ceiling crisis, says new poll
A majority of Americans disapprove of the GOP's role in the debt-ceiling crisis, a new CBS poll reveals.
Approximately 71% of voters said they oppose how their Republican representatives have dealt with recent negotiations to raise the $14.3 trillion debt ceiling, according to the survey released Monday.
President Obama's role in the negotiations was viewed more favorably, with 43% of those surveyed saying they approve of the job he has done.
More people view the President's efforts overall negatively, however, as 48% of voters said he has not done a good job.
The findings come as Obama and congressional leaders resume talks Monday after a weekend-long hiatus.
Both sides of Congress agree that raising the ceiling is critical, but GOPers continue to reject the current bill, which includes new taxes for the rich.
White House officials have waed that failure to reach the Aug. 2 deadline could force the govement to default on its debt payments.
A first-ever default could cause interest rates to increase dramatically and the value of the dollar to plummet.
The commander in chief also said last week that the govement may not be able to distribute Social Security checks if the deadline is not met.
Some Americans are skeptical of how the govement has portrayed the crisis, the poll shows.
Though 40% of those surveyed said they believe the govement's debt-ceiling waings, 36% said they think Washington has made the situation sound more critical than it actually is.
Most Americans remain optimistic about the Aug. 2 deadline -- 66% of voters said they believe Congress will reach an agreement by then.
