MARTA hikes fares 25 percent

ATLANTA — The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority has boosted fares by 25 percent.

The MARTA system's new prices kicked in Sunday. A one-way ticket on trains or buses now costs $2.50, up from $2. Riders with monthly
passes now pay $95, up from $68.

The fare hikes are frustrating many among the 134,600 who ride the mass transit system to work each weekday. But MARTA spokesman
Lyle Harris said the system had to raise the prices to avoid running a deficit.

It is the system's second rate hike in two years. The transit system had gone eight years without raising fares before its 2009 increase.

MARTA estimates the jump could cut ridership by 9 percent.
