Lawrenceville mom Ainenehi Abiodun accused of locking baby in car to go shopping
Lawrenceville police say they arrested Ainenehi Abiodun for leaving her baby alone in a locked car to go shopping.

Lawrenceville police say they arrested a Gwinnett County mother who left her baby alone in a locked car and went shopping.

Police say Ainenehi Abiodun claimed she ran in and out of the Walmart on Collins Hill Road for milk. But investigators say the surveillance cameras tell a different story.

The story began with a call from conceed shoppers in the parking lot on March 17.

"One of the children in the car noticed that in the car next to it there was a small child asleep inside the vehicle, said Lawrenceville Police Capt. Greg Vaughn.

Vaughn says they dispatched an officer immediately.

Police say a 17-month-old was locked in and alone in the car.

When the officer arrived, police say he asked the store to page the owner of the vehicle, but didn't take any chances.

The officer was able to unlock the vehicle, get into the vehicle," Vaughn said.

The officer got the baby out of the car before the mother came out of the store.

Police say Walmart surveillance cameras indicated the mother was inside the store for 25 minutes.  The officer noted it was 70 degrees and the sun was shining.

"One second's too long. You don't leave a child in a vehicle, a lot of things can happen, Vaughn said.

The officer charged the 33-year-old mother with misdemeanor reckless conduct. She bonded out of jail.

Kavanaugh went to her Lawrenceville home Wednesday moing. Abiodun said she wanted to speak to her attoey. But never came out.

Police say in this case, the baby was in good health. But they said the risk is too great.

"It's a big message that needs to be sent out, Vaughn said. ”I know it's probably a lot of trouble taking a child out of car seat and taking him into the store. It can't be that much trouble it can’t be."
