LaFayette Firefighter Marvin Chase Charged with Arson

LAFAYETTE, Ga. - A former LaFayette volunteer firefighter is facing an arson charge, and police say he's suspected of setting numerous vacant houses on fire.

Sgt. Stacey Meeks, lead investigator on the case with the LaFayette Police Department, says police hope to have enough evidence to indict 33-year-old Marvin Chase on about 20 counts of arson.

Chase is charged with setting one fire. He appeared on Wednesday before Walker County Magistrate Sheila Thompson, who set a bond of $10,000. He was released from jail later in the day.

LaFayette Public Safety Director Tommy Freeman says Chase was often the first firefighter on the scene when an abandoned building caught fire.

Members of Chase's family declined comment.
