Joyce Bailey: 2009 Boulevard Hit and Run Still Unsolved

ATLANTA, Ga. - A day after a Metro Atlanta woman was sentenced in a high-profile deadly hit-and-run crash, police are calling for the public’s help to solve another fatal hit and run accident.

It's been more than a year and a half since 46-year-old Joyce Bailey was killed while crossing the street on Boulevard in Atlanta. Police say this case is cold. They know they're looking for a silver or gray C Class Mercedes, but that's about it. Police say the driver never slowed or stopped.

”I can only ask him, why would you take someone away from their life, their friends-- she has family kids, said Laquita Williams, Joyce Bailey’s daughter.

Bailey was at the coer of Boulevard and Ralph McGill crossing the road when she was hit in March 2009.

”We don’t know who the driver was, Williams explained. ”We need closure. She has friends, family members who want to know who the driver was and why he kept going.

PEDS Atlanta says the stretch of Boulevard where Bailey was killed is a dangerous one for pedestrians. They say that may be due in part to the fact that the intersections are often 1,000 feet apart, and people don’t want to walk that far to cross the street.

PEDS Atlanta says one way to make Boulevard safer is to place pedestrian islands in the road so people don’t have to cross four lanes of traffic at once.

Williams, however, is still focused on the driver who never stopped, and the crime remains unsolved.

”At this time I’m just angry, frustrated because he hasn’t tued himself in, Williams said. ”If he tued himself in, it would be a weight off my shoulders.

Atlanta police say there is a CrimeStoppers reward for information in this case. PEDS Atlanta says steps to make Boulevard safer aren't prohibitively expensive. They say pedestrian islands could be put in for under $50,000 along that stretch of road.
