Atlanta police said a man walking to a relative's home from a MARTA station was shot and killed in Washington Park.

Investigators found the body of 46-year-old Thadeus Rand of Jonesboro on a bike path.

"It appeared the victim in this case was in the process of walking along the bike path from the MARTA station when he encountered the suspect, who produced a handgun. [The suspect] discharged the weapon at least one time, striking the victim in the back," said Atlanta Police Lt. Keith Meadows.

Rand, according to police, was in Atlanta for the holidays, visiting family and friends. At around 9:15 Sunday night, police said he decided to walk a relative to the MARTA station and that was the last his family heard from him.

"We have several neighbors having heard one gunshot. it was at that time we received a call from one of the family members indicating that the decedent was overdue coming home and that's when one of the officers searched the area and found the victim along the bike path," Meadows said.

Police have no motive nor suspects in the case. Without any witnesses to the shooting, police said they have yet to figure out exactly what happened and why.

If anyone has any information on the case, they are urged to call Atlanta police.
