Job Hunt a Challenge for Men
The struggle to find work remains a depressing reality for many in the state of Georgia.
Unemployment in the state stands at nearly 10 percent and the lack of jobs is posing a particular challenge for men.
Justin von Hanna is up and at 'em every moing by 7am but it's not to get ready for work, he rises early to find work. He's one of millions of Americans who are unemployed. The graphic designer says much of his day consists of waiting in the unemployment office.
"It's really a lot of waiting. It can be frustrating at times. Spending three hours to do maybe 15 minutes worth of paperwork," said job seeker Justin von Hanna.
Von Hanna is married and his wife is now the main breadwinner. In Georgia, the unemployment rate is at 9.9 percent and even higher for men - causing some to call what the country is going through a "he-cession."
Men are challenged not just by the job loss, but men are more reluctant to re-enroll in colleges and technical schools. It's very important for men to be more flexible about their career goals," said state labor commissioner Michael Thurmond.
Von Hanna says not having a steady paycheck makes it hard to budget. He says he and his wife are surviving through this rough patch by making key adjustments.
"A lot of grocery shopping and coming up with new meals to make at home, stuff like that. I've even start walking dogs in the neighborhood. Cash here and there," said von Hanna.
Labor commissioner Michael Thurmond believes the tide will tu, he just feels it will happen later than sooner. In the meantime, he encourages job seekers to consider getting back in school. Von Hanna says he optimistic about his chances. He's been taking freelance assignments - but he says most importantly he keeps himself motivated by staying busy and continuing to search.
"i've always told myself never give up. Just whatever you do put your heart into it," said von Hanna.
