Janitor Robert Striggles accused of setting fire to recreation center in Peachtree City

Police arrested a janitor for allegedly trying to bu down a community aquatic center in Peachtree City.

Authorities say surveillance video shows Robert Earl Striggles setting fire to an office area at the Kedron Fieldhouse and Aquatic Center.  Another fire was set in a storage room.

According to Peachtree City Police Capt. Rosanna Dove, Striggles poured a fluid on the desk inside the office.

The building was not destroyed by fire, but it did suffer extensive water and smoke damage. The building's water sprinklers ran for hours because a fault in the alarm did not alert authorities to the fire. The building's ventilation system will be replaced, along with ceiling tiles and carpet.

The center has been closed as contractors work to clean the damage.

"We've got summer camps here scheduled all summer long: basketball, volleyball, arts and crafts along with the swimming, so that really impacts everyone for as long as the facility is going to have to be closed," said a woman at the facility.

Officials are attempting to save the gymnasium's wood floor, which could cost at least $200,000.

Striggles, 19, is charged with several felonies, including arson, burglary and one count of interference with govement property.

The burglar charge against Striggles suggests the fires may have been set to cover up illegal activity by the janitor.

The center could remain closed for weeks.
