In PSA, Damon Evans Urges UGA Fans Not to Drink and Drive
In a public service announcement which plays for the crowd at the University of Georgia’s home football games, athletic director Damon Evans tells fans, "If you drink and drive, you lose." Now, Evans himself is facing charges of doing just that.
Evans, 40, was arrested on DUI charges late Wednesday night in north Atlanta. He was pulled over just before midnight, troopers say, at Roswell Road and Chastain Drive.
According to authorities, Evans smelled of alcohol. A field sobriety test was performed at the scene, and troopers say he refused a breathalyzer test after being taken to the Atlanta Pre-Trail Detention Center.
Prior to his arrest, Evans had taken part in a university campaign against drinking and driving. In fact, he is featured in a public service announcement urging fans not to drink and drive, and that announcement is played during all home football games.
”We ask that when leaving the game today, that you be responsible, Evans states in the 40-second announcement. ”Don’t drink and drive, and don’t let your friends drink and drive. Because if you drink and drive, you lose.
Evans goes on to encourage fans to choose a designated driver before each game.
In a news conference Thursday evening, Evans apologized for his actions. He said he had put a black cloud over the school's athletic program. CLICK HERE TO WATCH THE FULL NEWS CONFERENCE.
Late Thursday, UGA President Dr. Michael Adams released the following statement about Evans' arrest:
"UGA athletic director Damon Evans informed me early this moing of his arrest and provided me an account of the events of last night. Drinking and driving is a serious matter, and I was extremely disappointed to hear of the arrest. Certainly this is not an example of the kind of leadership that I expect our senior administrators to set. I have high regard for Damon personally; I care deeply about him and his family and know him to be a man of integrity. He has sincerely apologized to me for the embarrassment this has brought upon the University. I was notified of this matter while away on vacation and will reserve further action pending a full review by staff and legal counsel."
