An Illinois man pleaded guilty Friday to mailing threatening letters to at least four different schools, including two in Gwinnett County.

Officials with the U.S. Justice Department said 29-year-old Valtrez Stewart mailed threats to Meadowcreek High and Northview High School early last year.

The messages claimed, in part, that a bomb would detonate at the school killing at least 20 people, and promised brutal murders if money was not paid to certain individuals by a certain date.

Sentencing is scheduled for March 28.

”School should be a place where students are safe. All threats to harm schools, students, teachers and school personnel will be taken seriously by law enforcement, regardless of whether the threat later is revealed to be a hoax, said U.S. Attoey Sally Quillian Yates.
