House Bill Would Ban Online, Cell Phone Bullying

ATLANTA - Legislation expanding Georgia’s bullying law to include text messages and social media sites is expected to be filed this week in the state House.

The legislation would prohibit students from bullying by sending texts or e-mailing on a cell phone on school property or designated school places—including bus stops and school functions. It would also prohibit bullying through social media sites when such acts could affect the academic environment or are directed specifically at another student or school personnel.

The legislation is co-sponsored by Democratic Reps. Carolyn Hugley and Barbara Massey Reece.

Reece says there is more opportunity for bullying through technology and that children need to be protected in and out of the classroom.
