High school student Shan Ramcharan killed in crash just minutes from school
GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. - A Gwinnett County high school student was killed Thursday afteoon in a traffic accident just minutes from campus.
Police say the crash happened around 2:30 p.m. Thursday after 17-year-old Shan D. Ramcharan, a student at North Gwinnett High School, lost control of his Nissan 350Z while coming down a curve on Moore Road in Suwanee and was hit by an on-coming car, driven by 53-year-old Ann C. Rhodes, of Sugar Hill, according to an accident report filed by Gwinnett Police.
Ramcharan was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville, where he later died from his injuries.
"Dealing with death is difficult for all people, and it can be very challenging for teens," said Principal Nathan Ballantine in a letter to parents. A team of counselors were dispatched to the school Friday to help students cope.
"As you know, this is a very caring community, and I know your thoughts and prayers will be with the family and our school during this time."
Rhodes refused medical treatment at the scene of the wreck, and left the scene to get treatment, according to the narrative in the report.
Investigators are working to determine if speed might have been a factor in the wreck.
