ATLANTA - Police say a 15-year-old boy is dead after being shot in the head in northwest Atlanta.

Investigators are trying to determine if charges will be filed after officers discovered the body of Marquez Montgomery inside a home on Adkins Road around 7 p.m. Monday. Police say he had been shot at least once.

Montgomery is a 10th grader and plays football at Mays High School.

Atlanta police confirmed that they are questioning a family member in the case. Family members say it was all an accident.

"We have an individual right now detained. We are going to take him down to headquarters. Right now we’re trying to determine if this was an accident or if it is a homicide. Right now, it’s too early to tell," Lt. Charles Hampton said.

A crisis team was at Mays High School on Tuesday to help students and staff cope with the tragedy. 

"Our deepest condolences go out to the family of Marquez Montgomery, who attended Benjamin E. Mays High School. Atlanta Public Schools sent a crisis team to Mays this moing to provide grief counseling for students and staff," an Atlanta Public Schools spokesperson said in a statement.
