Habersham Sheriff Joey Terrell, deputy Bill Zigan shot responding to domestic call

Habersham County Sheriff Joey Terrell is recovering after being shot while responding to a deadly domestic violence call over the weekend. 

The sheriff and Deputy Bill Zigan arrived at a home on Lower Pond Court just after 7:30 p.m. Sunday night. Inside they found a woman who had been shot dead.

As Terrell and Zigan continued to look for more victims, they were ambushed.

Authorities confirm the shooter is former Gainesville Police officer Anthony Giaquinta, the dead woman's husband.

Sheriff Terrell was shot once. Deputy Zigan multiple times. Both are expected to survive. The sheriff was treated and released from the hospital. The deputy is being held oveight.

Both the sheriff and deputy retued fire and Giaquinta fled the home. He and another man were later found dead near the back of the house. The other man's identity and relationship with Giaquinta and his wife hasn't been released.

The Giaquintas have two daughters, one of whom was home at the time. She escaped unharmed.

The G.B.I. is assisting in the investigation, which continues.
