Police in Gwinnett County are investigating an officer involved shooting in Stone Mountain that killed one man on Monday.

Corporal Edwin Ritter of the Gwinnett County Police Department says officers responded to a tip that a man they were looking for was located in the 1000 block of Old Tucker Road.

Gwinnett police say Christopher Kenney was behind the wheel of a green pickup truck at the location, possibly asleep behind the wheel. Kenney had several warrants out for his arrest. Investigators say he threatened someone with a gun last week.

According to Gwinnett authorities, officers broke the glass of the truck and tried to Taser Kenney. They were unsuccessful. Then Kenney put the truck into reverse, striking several police cars, pushing them back 30 to 40 feet.

Police say it was at that time that multiple officers shot and killed Kenney.

Police said that Kenney had escaped capture twice and that he was armed.

”The fact that he was armed and the fact that he would run was in the forefront of their minds, said Gwinnett County Police Cpl. Jake Smith.

It is not clear how many officers fired nor how many shots were fired.
Police said the truck the suspect was found in was reported stolen.

The officers who fired their weapons have been placed on administrative leave, pending the outcome of the investigation
