A northeast Atlanta grocery store owner was shot to death Wednesday night.

The shooting happened at the Banna grocery store on Irwin Street. Atlanta police investigators told Channel 2’s Michael Buczyner the victim was in the process of closing the store when he was killed.

The gunman shot 48-year-old Suhrid Das once in the abdomen. He died at the hospital just after 10 p.m. Neighbors in the Fourth Ward neighborhood were in shock.

”I'd hate to see him go out like that because he's a good man," Jimbo Billups said.

Investigators believe robbery was the motive. They’re looking into whether another robbery is connected.

"We were sleeping, and we heard someone smashing the window," Taria Camerino told Buczyner.

She and her family were in an apartment above the grocery store when someone broke in just hours after the shooting. She said she tried to keep the robber out of a bedroom where she, her partner and two children were hiding behind a door.

"He kicked it in. He smashed it in and pushed it out of the way," Camerino said. "He said he was going to kill me many times."

She said she was forced downstairs into her bakery and robbed of cash.

Anyone with information is asked to call police.
