Atlanta police are investigating the death of a Grady High School freshman who was hit by a vehicle at the intersection of 10th and Monroe Dr. in Midtown.

Alexia Hyneman, 14, was heading home from a theater performance at Grady High School when she was hit Thursday night.

"We knew very early that things did not seem well, but you always have a hope against hope that was all the way up until this afteoon," said Don Hyneman, Alexia's grandfather.

According to police reports, Alexia was trying to cross Monroe Drive at 10th Street on her bicycle when she was hit by a car.

Police say witnesses told them the driver who hit Alexia had a green light, and did not see her dart into the intersection.

Hyneman says the family is reeling from the loss.

"And of course we know, because she was a saved individual, we know that the shell that she has is completely different now that she is with Christ," Hyneman said.

Her grandfather says Alexia passed away surrounded by family and they're comforted to by several of her friends and fellow drama students at Grady High School.
