Gilmer County teacher Maria Murray arrested after allegedly slapping 10-year-old student
Gilmer County authorities say an Ellijay Elementary School teacher was arrested for allegedly slapping a 10-year-old special needs student.
Maria Murray was charged with felony cruelty to children by the Gilmer County Sheriff's Office.
According to Gilmer County Charter Schools Superintendent Jason Kouns, Murray was fired after she allegedly slapped the student in a bathroom.
Another teacher talked with the student and verified that the incident occurred, according to Kouns.
Murray, a para-professional, had worked with the district since 2002 and had no other complaints against her for hitting children, according to Kouns.
